can something like this be pulled from under our feet
Characters: Rogue and Remy
Content: Miss match of canon. Remy's fighting for the Brotherhood, Rogue's just left.
So this was what it was like being on the other side. Fighting the good fight didn't seem like an actual fight. It was more like destruction. A war was raging on for the Brotherhood. Charles had called them in. Rogue still wasn't exactly "in" with the X-Men, yet. She knew all eyes were on her as Cyclops tried to lead them on.
She was still trying to prove herself. She wasn't a spy for Magneto and the Professor trusted her enough to make her one of them. Still the point was to subdue as many members of the Brotherhood as possible. Fighting against the people she once fought with. But this was her life now.
Things seemed evenly matched, save for the burning building and things exploding. But Ice Man and Storm seemed to be fighting back well enough. Marie weaved in and out of people, doing what she could. She was still getting used to the idea of actually using her power instead of just manipulating people with it.

“You mean dis?” he asked, gesturing around at the fire and destruction that surrounded them. “Dis ain’t nothin’ compared t’ what I can do,” he finished darkly. Removing the charge from the cards in his hand, he folded them up and then fanned them out again, casually letting them play about his fingers.
“Never thought I’d see you standin’ up fo’ scum like dat.” He flicked an uncharged card at the man cowering behind her, smirking when the man flinched as the card harmlessly struck him.

"I know what you're capable of, Gambit." She crossed her arms. It's not like she hadn't seen it several times, relished in it even. But that wasn't her now. She stood opposite of him.
He was fast enough with the uncharged card. "You think I care about them?" Rogue tilted her head back. "Not even a little. You're destroyin' things just to do it. What point is there to make aside from givin'em more ammunition to fight with?" She retorted.

Truth be told, though, even Gambit wasn’t fully aware of the full extent of his powers as they stood now. Before they had been altered, though... even he couldn’t handle the sheer magnitude of them.
“What point?” he scoffed, the remaining cards seeming to vanish from his hand. “How about dat we ain’ gonna just stand by while dey try t’ register us, imprison us, kill us jus’ because we’re different? ‘cause dat’s what it’s gonna come down to.”

"You don't know that." It was weak at best. "I'm not sayin' to let it happen, but killin'em? How is that gunna fix anythin'? More'll come in their place."

“Come on, Rogue, y’ ain’t never been dat naive,” he said in reply. She had to know it was coming, it was so obvious, but she was with the X-Men now in their cushy mansion and all their optimism and ideals. It was really telling that their leader saw the world through literal rose coloured glasses.
All this wasn’t really what was bothering him, though; it was her insinuation that he was out here to kill all these men in cold blood. Sure, he wouldn’t exactly shed a tear if one of them didn’t make it through this night, but he didn’t plan to intentionally murder anyone. “True, but dey gonna be scared. Kill off dis lot an’ de next might not be so quick ta step up.”
Of course she didn’t have to know that. She already made her mind up about him and he wasn’t about to try to change it.

She swallowed hard and looked up at him. "You'll just incite another group to do worse." It wasn't like mutant hate wasn't rampant.
Her hands balled into fists at her side, still waiting for him to make a move. She didn't think he was as bad as some of them. She had noticed that he had yet to actually kill anyone. Or at least all of his actions were intended to blow things up. If people got hit by the blow back, so be it. Still, Rogue had to be prepared in case he decided to do more. And threatening the man behind her with a card was enough for her to interfere.
"You should leave."

“Den let dem do deir worst, ‘cause it ain’ gonna be enough,” he said. The battle was dying down, though, so Gambit saw little reason to argue with her suggestion that he mosey on out of here. If she wanted to stick around and clean up the mess then that was her choice, but he didn’t have to make it easy on her.
“Dey ain’ never gonna trust you,” he said. He didn’t directly identify The X-men as the ‘they’, but he knew she would understand him just fine. “An’ as for de Friends of Humanity,” he said the name as if the very taste of the words in his mouth disgusted him. As he said them, though, he just so happened to glance at the forgotten man who Rogue had stepped in to protect... just in time to see the man raising a gun. “Rogue, look out!”
It is said that Gambit had reflexes so fast that he could dodge bullets, and had the gun been aimed on him this might have been true, but the shot went off as he lunged at Rogue, taking them both to the ground in a heap, the bullet just nicking his arm on the way by.

And before she knew it, Marie was down on the ground with him on top of her. She looked at him, brows furrowed before craning her neck to look back at the man who had just fired the gun, the bullet bouncing off of a nearby building.
"You saved me." She was a little confused at that. She tried to get out from under him, but pushing him off wasn't so easy.

”You saved me.” She said it like she was surprised, like she had expected him to just let her get shot. It was enough to break the spell and kick him into action again, because while he may have saved her, the threat was still present. Swiftly getting off of her, Gambit spun around, one heavy boot quickly disarming the fallen man. With eyes somehow cold as ice yet burning with fire, he crouched down and grabbed the front of them human’s jacket, pulling him up to eye level.
“Dat was a big mistake, homme,” he threatened as the material fisted in his hand began to glow.

She hadn't realized Remy had already moved off of her and towards the man when she stood. His hand was glowing when she started to put the pieces together. "Remy, no. You'll be no better'an him if you do this." Marie pleaded, using his real name for the first time.

Then he heard her voice. Gone was the anger and the coldness. The words were no softer, but there was something in her tone and the way she said his name that broke through the red fog that had settled over him. Looking down at the terrified man, the glowing shirt and his own hand causing it all, Remy felt suddenly sick. It was one thing to cause random mass destruction, but this would be murder, cold and calculated murder.
Slowly the glowing light faded and when he finally released the man there was no danger in it anymore, though he did make sure to push him hard enough into the pavement to knock him unconscious. Getting swiftly to his feet, the Cajun kept his eyes on the fallen man a moment longer before finally turning his eyes to Rogue. “You know jus’ cause you switched sides don’ make us de bad guys now.”
He could still save her, he could still show mercy. Just because they no longer saw eye to eye didn’t make him evil.

She swallowed sharply. It was best to ignore what he just said. Pressing her streaks behind her ear, she looked down. "Thanks. For saving me." She told him quietly.
